Across Gippsland, some of the region’s most important natural habitats persist on private land, protected through Trust for Nature conservation covenants and actively cared for by local landholders. These areas safeguard native grassland, saltmarsh, forest, wetland and woodland habitats. They create permanent refuges for threatened plants and animals that have already been lost from much of the region.
Established in 2019, the Gippsland Conservation Fund was created to provide ongoing support for the care of these protected places. Thanks to the generosity of a lead donor who matched gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000, together with contributions from many supporters, the Fund reached its initial goal of establishing a $1 million endowment.
As the Fund has grown, so too has its capacity to support the long-term conservation of the places, species and ecological communities that make Gippsland unique. The Gippsland Conservation Fund is administered by JB Were on behalf of Trust for Nature. The Fund’s balance is reflected below. Every donation stays in Gippsland, and income generated by the endowment supports local conservation efforts.
Today, the Fund is helping landholders care for some of Gippsland’s most important habitats, supporting restoration, habitat improvement and the protection of threatened species. With more than 330 conservation covenants across the region and counting, there are meaningful opportunities to reduce pressure on native plants and wildlife from deer, disease and climate change. Together, we can reconnect fragmented landscapes and improve ecosystem resilience across Gippsland.
