Habitat Track: Modern conservation science for private land in Victoria

Trust for Nature works across thousands of private properties – conservation covenants, reserves and Land for Wildlife sites – protecting some of Victoria’s most important remaining habitat.

To do that well, we need to know what’s happening on that land, how it’s changing, and where our effort will have the greatest impact.

That’s why we’re launching Habitat Track: Trust for Nature’s new biodiversity data and monitoring framework.

Private land supports a significant proportion of Victoria’s biodiversity, yet it’s often under-represented in the data that informs government planning and investment.

At Trust for Nature, we already collect high-quality ecological information. Many landholders also collect observations on their own properties. It’s time to bring this all together to truly demonstrate the impact of private land conservation.

Habitat Track will help achieve this.

It creates a single, integrated framework so that when we collect more information, we ensure it goes somewhere useful – informing management, prioritisation and partnerships.

Habitat Track will harness the power of technology and the extraordinary people in our community to take private land conservation in Victoria to the next level.

But we can’t launch this important initiative without the support of people like you.
A modern, integrated approach

Habitat Track combines three proven streams of conservation science into one shared framework: Citizen science, spatial and remote sensing, and targeted field surveys

Together, these three streams create a rigorous evidence base for planning, reporting and adaptive management.

To begin, Trust for Nature needs to build a shared library of field equipment – including camera traps and acoustic recorders – that can be strategically deployed across private land with the highest conservation value.

Your gift can help fund:
Wildlife sound recorders capturing birds, bats and frogs
Next generation camera traps recording elusive fauna day and night
Scientific and data systems support ensuring information flows to where it matters most

By supporting Habitat Track, you’re helping bring private land conservation into the modern age – and ensuring the care landholders give today is recognised, protected and built on for the future.

Habitat Track

Trust for Nature’s new biodiversity data and monitoring framework – a practical, science-led way to bring our conservation work into the modern age and ensure nature on private land is visible, valued and prioritised.

Smarter conservation decisions
With better data, we can make smarter conservation decisions, earlier – directing resources where they make the greatest difference.
clear proof of impact
It will provide us with a clear proof of impact on private land, strengthening funding and policy influence.
Lower long term costs
We can be more efficient with resources and achieve better conservation outcomes through better prioritisation and monitoring at scale.
landholder collaboration
It will enable stronger partnerships with landholders, who see their knowledge and effort reflected in shared data.
A shared evidence base
A shared evidence base will unlock deeper partnerships by clearly demonstrating conservation outcomes on private land.

For you.

For your family.

For future generations.

For the world.

The wonder of nature, and everything nature has to offer, has been given to us as a gift.

Each one of us is responsible for taking care and looking after the natural wonders of Victoria — from rainforests to deserts, coasts to mountains.

In the face of climate change and continued vegetation loss, Trust for Nature’s role is increasingly important in preserving Victoria’s remaining native habitat.

Only with your help will we be able to maintain and protect these wonders forever.
