Global Conservation Targets

Local action for global impact

While much of Trust for Nature’s work is local, ‘boots-on-the-ground’ conservation, it is strategic , science-based , and squarely linked to Victorian and national policy priorities and international targets.

30 by 30

Relevantly, Australia has signed the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) under the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (CBD), and has committed, among other things, to protect at least 30 per cent of our lands and oceans for conservation by 2030 (30 by 30).

At the Environment Ministers meeting in October 2022, the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments all committed to work together to achieve this goal.

At Trust for Nature, our covenants and reserves form part of the National Reserve System, which in turn contributes to global 30 by 30 targets. Our innovative partnerships, including with First Peoples, help us to grow our protected areas in ways that support our precious plants, animals, and future generations.

Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, Member States of the UN adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which underpin the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This agenda defines global sustainability aspirations for 2030.

There are 17 SDGs which describe specific outcomes across the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic prosperity, social inclusion and environmental conservation.

Trust for Nature is proud to be supporting a number of the SDGs, in particular SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
SDG 15 (Life on land)
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss
SDG 13 (Climate Action)
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
