French Island Cottage
This unique property is situated in a quiet corner, of a quiet island. It’s a peaceful, off-the-grid retreat with high environmental values, yet it is not far from Melbourne. There are multiple ecological zones, with diverse flora and abundant wildlife, including koalas, echidnas, potoroos, birdlife and bandicoots. The island is an environmental hot spot, surrounded by Westernport Bay and RAMSAR wetlands.
The one-bedroom house is a charming barn conversion. The adjacent two-bedroom cottage provides extra space, most recently used as an award-winning BNB French Island Cottage. The solar/battery system and generous water tanks enable sustainable off-the-grid living. There is also an irrigated garden, with an igloo for all year veggie growing. To make the transition to island life easy, it comes with well documented instructions, explaining all the facilities plus tips for managing the property.
In 2018 we began restoring the land, planting over 12,000 trees and understory. Combined with natural regrowth, this has created a vibrant wildlife corridor, re-connecting isolated sections of national park. You can read about us in the Trust for Nature Conservation Bulletin #81.
