Victoria has committed to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

To achieve this goal, there will be an increasing number of renewable energy and transmission infrastructure projects rolled out across Victoria in coming years.

Renewable energy projects can include sustainable power production facilities like wind and solar farms.

Trust for Nature has developed a resource compiling frequently asked questions in relation to renewable energy projects, including information about how Trust for Nature can support landholders who become aware of a project that may impact a covenant.

Mining proposals - Frequently Asked Questions

Mining activity occurs across Victoria, and is on the increase as a result of the national energy transition.

In particular, heavy mineral sands deposits occur in the Murray and Gippsland Basins in northwest and southeast Victoria.

Factsheet: ecological thinning

Thick stands of eucalypts

Ecological thinning is the removal of a proportion of trees within a thicket to increase resource availability and achieve conservation goals.

Thinning increases the resources available to remaining trees, which allows them to develop into ecologically
important large trees. It can also stimulate growth and germination of understorey and ground cover vegetation.

This factsheet provides information for landholders on deciding whether to thin and best practice thinning.

Golden Sun Moth Conservation Assessment Report

The Golden Sun Moth is a threatened species once found on grasslands across south east Australia. Since colonisation, most of those grasslands have disappeared due to agriculture and urban development, resulting in populations of the Golden Sun Moth being highly reduced and fragmented.

With 80 per cent of the Golden Sun Moth’s remaining habitat found on private property, Trust for Nature has identified the species as a priority for protection on private land through our Statewide Conservation Plan.

This report brings together existing knowledge about the Golden Sun Moth and its conservation needs, and identifies key areas for further research.

This report was initiated by Trust for Nature, in association with the Golden Sun Moth Conservation Fund, and authored by Graham Jury, Danielle Harmshaw and Daniel Young of TREC Land Services.

Protecting Golden Sun Moths

The Golden Sun Moth is a threatened species that occurs in south-east Australia. In Bangerang language it is called Yurrnga Ganbina. It has unique colouration and the sexes can be distinguished by their wing colours with only the females having the characteristic golden hindwings. The habitat of the Golden Sun Moth includes native temperate grasslands, which were made and maintained by Aboriginal people over countless generations. Less than one per cent of these grasslands remain and as a result populations of the Golden Sun Moth are highly reduced and fragmented.
