Dryden Road, Gobarup
There isn’t a weed on this property – it’s 50 acres of Box Ironbark and Sandstone Ridge Shrubland native regrowth. We put a Trust for Nature Covenant on it to allow it all to grow old. It’s a long way from anywhere – about halfway between Heathcote and Rushworth. A house would have to be off-grid, and pretty fire-resistant! The soil layer is very thin, with low rainfall – it’s very hard to grow anything that’s not indigenous, as my uncle found out here decades ago. But the Gobarup Flora Reserve is on one side, the Redcastle-Graytown State Forest is on the other. There are orchids, Dodder Laurels, Ironbarks and three different Mallee eucalypts. It’s a beautiful piece of a much larger habitat area, to enjoy and protect forever. It’s fenced, with a little dam in the middle – and a path leading to it. In early spring there is a blaze of yellow all over the western half of the property – Whirrakee wattle, Acacia williamsonii. A special place, for lovers of wildflowers and birds.
